Architecture Contest

Architecture Contest

From 19 April to 5 May 2013

As part of its development strategy, Chillon Castle Foundation has been striving to improve its visitor facilities through quality installations.

This vision is also completely in line with the need for conservation and continuous development of our heritage site, with a view to relieving the impact of tourism on the monument.

To meet objective, the Foundation organised a SIA 142 architecture and landscape architecture contest on 16 October 2012.

Open to all, the project included further enhancement to the site and its landscaping, as well as the construction of a service building outside the castle.

This new building will house a cafeteria and a new sales venue that will group the two existing shops along with the necessary services.

A highly qualified jury was designated to select the winner and the other projects that were granted awards on 18 April 2013. It gathered before all the professional, non-professional and deputy members on 22 and 23 March and 4 April 2013 to assess and judge the 67 submitted projects. After deliberating, the jury unanimously awarded the five prizes, with one special mention, to the following architect offices:

  • 1st place – ‘Jardin Anglais’, Dreier Frenzel Sàrl, Lausanne
  • 2nd place – ‘Beauté du Sauvage’, Karamuk Kuo Architekten & Ganz Landschaftsarchitekten, Zurich
  • 3rd place – ‘L’Approche’, Mondada Frigerio Blanc Architectes, Lausanne
  • 4th place – ‘Acupuncture’, Meier + Associés Architectes SA, Genève
  • 5th place – Special mention for the ‘Murs’ project , Mauro Turin Architectes, Lausanne
  • 6th place – ‘Voir’, Bureau A, Genève

In accordance with SIA 143 regulations, all projects submitted to the jury were displayed to the public from 19 April until 5 May 2013. The exhibition was on display at the Coats of Arms Hall (room 18) and in the Domus Clericorum (room 31), and allowed visitors to see contestants’ work and the future aspect of the areas around the castle itself.
