Self-guided tour

Visitors can tour the castle at their leisure, with help from our brochure (available in 19 languages) and a map; navigating their way through the rooms in numerical order, or in any direction they like. Most people take around 1.5-2 hours to walk around this island stronghold. There is no time limit unless we are about to close. The permanent itinerary is equipped with touch screens and headphones which you can use to watch 8 mini films, each 3-4 minutes long.

There is even a magnificent weapons room, complete with battle soundscape, to be explored in the keep and projections of medieval silhouettes in the crypt – fun for children and grown-ups alike!

Permanent exhibition for children

Get ready to conquer the castle with a special map especially designed with you in mind! Allow Drako, the little Chillon Castle dragon, to show you around our magnificent rooms.

With a little help from our resident dragon, mum, dad, or your teachers, head off in search of Drako’s ancestors and uncover the mysteries of the castle.

The Drako itinerary is available for free at the ticket office and comes in English, French, German and Chinese. It’s designed to match up with the adult guide, so is perfect for a family day out or as part of a school trip with younger pupils (aged 6-10).

Temporary exhibition itinerary

Our guests will also be given a guide to must-see installations in our temporary exhibits – just look out for the symbol.
