Chillon and the wonderful era of posters

From 31 August to 24 November 2013

Chillon Castle is the perfect illustration of the history of posters in Switzerland. From the end of the 18th century the image became widespread, in particular thanks to Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Lord Byron.

A national icon, Chillon Castle was first and foremost used to promote hotels, transport companies, regional associations, the chocolate industry and tourism offices, who were the main clients. The Belle Epoque, at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, saw the most intense commercial use of the castle’s image. It was used more sparingly in later periods up to its revival in the first decade of the 21st century, and was then finally used to promote the monument itself.
