Marie of Brabant

Marie of Brabant (c. 1277-1340) / Amadeus V (1252/3-1323)

Three years after Sybille of Bâgé’s death, Amadeus V married Marie of Brabant. While their territories may have been geographically distant, their union ensured continued close relations and fostered exchanges, most notably in relation to Brabant’s significant textile market, which dressed the royal European courts at the beginning of the 14th century.

In her husband’s absence, Marie seemingly played a political and diplomatic role. She managed life at court and had her children educated, thereby influencing the customs of the Savoy elites, especially when it came to literary tastes. As a knowledgeable patron, she acquired two breviaries between 1301 and 1302. She was widowed in 1323 and never remarried.
