Bonne of Bourbon

Bonne of Bourbon (c. 1340-1402) / Amadeus VI (1334-1383)

Bonne of Bourbon was descended from the prestigious French royal family and was married by proxy to Amadeus VI in 1355. After a 12-day journey on horseback, she finally met her husband. Having been well educated, she took on the role of regent several times.

Upon the death of her son, Amadeus VII, she became tutor to her grandson, Amadeus VIII, much to the dismay of her daughter-in-law, Bonne of Berry. This situation created some real tension that ended in a conciliation ruling in favour of Bonne of Bourbon. She was finally stripped of her power when her grandson came of age.

Testimonies on the pomp of her court suggest she was a countess with significant financial means who was heavily involved in charitable affairs.
