Publication “Vies de princesses?”

17 August 2021 - 31 March 2022

Vies de Princesses?

Les femmes de la Maison de Savoie (XIIIe-XVIe siècle)

The brand new 100-page scientific publication on the aristocratic women of the Savoy family is now available. Published in French by the Chillon Castle Foundation, it is on sale at the castle shop and online.

To know everything about the life facets of countesses and duchesses, at the time when the castle of Chillon was under Savoy domination: at the age of two, going to live in the family of her future husband or at 21 remarrying for the third time? To run one’s house or to rule a principality? To die in the prime of life or to take advantage of one’s status as a widow? To carry out charitable deeds or to promote a religious order? To play cards or to commission numerous artistic works?

While questioning the place of women in the Middle Ages, the different themes covered allow us to discover Bonne de Bourbon, Mary of Burgundy, Anne of Cyprus, Yolande of France and Beatrice of Portugal as players in court society.

This is the result of a temporary exhibition that was cancelled due to the pandemic. This beautiful book was written by Fanny Abbott, assistant curator of the Musée historique de Vevey, and Nathalie Roman, lecturer in medieval art history at the University of Lausanne. With the generous support of the Association of the Friends of Chillon.
