Chillon and the wonderful era of posters

Hundred and fifty years of advertising around a legendary landmark

Exhibition from 31 August until 24 November 2013

The image of Chillon Castle illustrates the history of posters in Switzerland very well. From the end of the 18th century it began to be circulated on a large scale, in particular thanks to Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Lord Byron.

As a national icon, the portrayal of Chillon Castle was first and foremost used to promote hotels, transport companies, regional associations, the chocolate industry and tourism offices, who were the main clients. The Belle Epoque, the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, was the height of the use of the castle’s image for purely commercial purposes. It was used more sparingly in later periods up to its revival in the first decade of the 21st century, and was then finally used to promote the monument itself.

Discover Chillon and the wonderful era of posters. Just follow the thematic chronological itinerary beginning in the Anken room (after #13), then in the Hall of the Coats-of-Arms (#18), down in the Domus Clericorum, (#31) and finally in the Logia Parlamenti (#36).
