Since March 2011, commercial use of the name « Château de Chillon® » and two viewpoints of the castle are protected.
Switzerland’s most frequently visited monument has made efforts to protect its name and image from abusive use. Chillon Castle wants to reinforce its exclusive rights to their use. The Federal Institute of Intellectual Property has recently registered trademarks of both the name “CHATEAU DE CHILLON™ ” and graphic reproductions of the castle from two different viewpoints (from Montreux and from Villeneuve). These three trademarks were designed in collaboration with the specialised offices of Tradamarca in Lausanne, who also took care of the official registration of the marks.
Intellectual property rights of a historical monument are a first, and this protection provides the Chillon Castle Foundation with the exclusive right to apply the trademarks to a large range of products and services. The three registered trademarks also bring the castle into the legal sphere of events-related celebrities, as it gives the Foundation the specific right to authorise its partners “to associate their identity or that of their products with the values of originality, prestige and history connected to a unique site and building known throughout the world” (Swissreg).
Permission for all and any professional photography shooting, film shooting (including drones), radio and television programme filming is subject to special regulations and requires written authorisation in advance from Chillon Castle management. Requests must be received in writing at least two months prior to the filming or shooting. A formal request must be made to the Management for any and all use of the image of Chillon Castle for commercial purposes.
