Project Work

Work carried out on the castle ranges from minor maintenance repairs to major campaigns. These projects take place along tourist activities.

Projects at Chillon are organized according to two complementary aspects: the coherence of the project in regards to a zone or a part of the building, and the annual rhythm of the thematic campaigns.

Projects on a sector of the castle are often part of larger-scale campaigns, such as the restoration of the façades of the “lake” side of the castle, from 2013 to 2025. The annual thematic campaigns allow for routine maintenance (roofs), for inventory-related checks (wood, painted decorations), or specific projects (improving the railing, redesigning the lighting, minor masonry consolidation).

Since October 2017, Chillon Castle Foundation and Vaud Cantonal Council have been carrying out landscape rehabilitation work in the area, installing public lighting and building a cafeteria pavilion. The aim is to give the site a make-over, better protect the environment and enhance the visitor experience. This work will be taking place until early 2020. In the meantime, there may be significant road restrictions, especially in the off-peak season. The first part beginns with Chillon's garden between September and October 2018. The second one starts from the 17th of October and ends on the 30th of November along the dock to the castle. From the 22th of October 2018 to the 31th of March 2020 the main developments include building a café/restaurant pavilion.

Chillon is never closed to the public, which forces the construction projects to coexist with touristic activities, a delicate yet interesting challenge.
