From 20th February to 23rd May 2010 - Exhibition of Heritage in Stock- Chillon’s Collections

An exhibition of the Cantonal Museum of Archaeology and History in Lausanne in collaboration with the Chillon Castle Foundation: 20 February – 23 May 2010

The aim of the exhibition at the Espace Arlaud of Lausanne and at Chillon Castle is to reveal the unknown objects and artifacts that had previously been gathered to create a museum at Chillon Castle, the canton’s landmark monument.

The original project of setting up a history museum at the castle dates from 1887, date of the foundation of the Chillon Castle Association. Since that time, the collections have been added to through donations and in particular through purchases, which were destined to furnish the castle once the restorations had been completed.

With this in mind, furniture, weapons, pewter and various domestic items, such as spinning wheels, ceramic wares and locks, as well as some “pieces of great interest” chosen for their historical value, sculptures, painted panels and stained glass of the XVth and XVIIth centuries were collected.

The archaeological findings made during the excavations during the restorations begun at the end of the XIXth century make up the second part of the collections. As signs of the castle’s daily life of all different periods, these items have hardly been exploited up till now. Thousands of fragments that witness to everyday life in the castle throughout its different historical periods, such as tiles, pottery and ceramics, leather items, arrow heads, coins and building elements, all stayed in boxes.

The Museum of Archaeology and History became owner of these collections in 2001 and had part of them transferred to the cantonal warehouses in Lucens. These artefacts, largely unknown to non-specialists, deserved to come out of their dusty storage into the light of day and finally be shown to the public, so as to bring the saga of the Chillon museum to life, if only for the time of an exhibition.

The Chillon Castle Foundation is taking a two-fold part in this effort: firstly, with a temporary exhibition of the collections of weapons in the Hall of Coats-of-Arms, and secondly, by enhancing certain pieces of furniture currently on display at the castle.
