School outings Teaching outside the classroom
The castle is a wonderful venue for teaching outside the classroom. A visit to Chillon can provide a living hands-on approach to History, Art History, Architecture and Earth Sciences. Our staff welcomes school outings and on location teaching opportunities throughout the year.
School groups must be accompanied and led by their teachers for the visit of the castle and any school projects inside the monument.
Reservation (mandatory)
Reservations for school groups are mandatory, with or without a guided tour.
We ask you to schedule your visit to the castle before mid-May or in the autumn, if possible. From June to September the castle is under attack from large numbers of visitors, so it is best to avoid the busiest time. To see the castle in good conditions, we advise you to schedule your visit at the following times:
- Mornings: 09:00 – 10:00
- Lunch hour: 11:30 – 13:00
- Afternoons: from 16:00
Information for teachers
We recommend that teachers visit the castle at their ease prior to the school outing. Our guides are at your disposal to assist you. Ask at the Ticket Office or Information to see if a guide is available.
Only official guides are entitled to guide within the premises of the Castle of Chillon.

Dossier pédagogique
A didactic file in French is available to help you prepare your visit. This comprehensive document includes different approaches to the castle (history, architecture, painting, etc.). It is comprised of three parts: «before», «during» and «after», which will enable you to work in class before your visit, to make the visit itself dynamic and active, and to prolong the didactic effects of the visit with suggestions for other entertaining and educational activities. You can download this teaching file from our website for distribution to your students (it is not provided at the castle). The didactic file has been designed for students in 5th, 6th and 7th year.
